Another stepping stone in achieving a completed Metaverse, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance is testing a metaverse social media app called Party Island (派对岛) on China’s App Store.

Party Island will create a digital community for users to meet up, chat and attend events. Instead of interacting and socializing in real life, users will be communicating virtually via their avatars.

The app is currently in beta testing mode and is only accessible through an invitation code. Like Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, access to the social network is only possible if the user has a valid mobile phone number.

The metaverse was one of 2021’s top ten internet terms in China, and is a world where a user’s online and offline world is interchangeable and fluid. The metaverse allows users to virtually connect with others in real-time, and includes a range of technology including virtual reality software, augmented reality, and 3D holographic avatars.

In China, interest in the metaverse has been growing in traction, with more companies embracing the new developments in technology. Alongside ByteDance’s Party Island is Baidu’s Xirang, the first metaverse social media app in China.
